Rotary and COVID-19
April 1, 2020Rotary International is monitoring the development of the coronavirus on many levels. On the local level Rotary recommends that clubs meet virtually or cancel or postpone activities. The Bennington Rotary Club is meeting through Zoom at its regular times on Friday.
The first meeting was on March 27 and the next will be on April 3. The Rotary International Conference scheduled for June 6-10 in Honolulu, Hawaii has been cancelled. Other major conferences have also been cancelled. Their leadership and board meetings will be virtual meetings.
District grant funds may be used to support local activities such as the purchase of thermometers, protective medical gear, or other items to donate to local medical professionals. There are also disaster response grants for local disasters that clubs can apply for.
Cindy Hudson-Kanpp, chair of our Community Projects Committee, has projects she would like club members to consider. Here is her statement about the first idea: "The orphanage in Rapha, Kenya which we heard about at our Feb. 21 meeting, has been closed by the Kenyan government for a month, but there is still a need for financial support. The teachers and staff are continuing to be paid, many of whom have remained at the orphanage to care for the gardens and animals, especially the COWS. So please, if you have not made a donation to the "Cash Cow" project, send your donation to our Rotary club at PO Box 24 in Bennington and mark your check "Cash Cow". We're trying to raise enough for them to buy another cow for their small dairy which is helping the orphanage to become self-sustaining. If you missed the 2/21 meeting or want more information about the orphanage, go to their website www.healraisingourworld.org to learn about ways to help.
The other project Cindy has in mind is making homemade masks. She has a link to a website that provides instructions as well as an explanation of how effective they are.
Here's the website with guidelines and relevant links
From their website: Are cloth masks effective? It is important to be clear what you are using a mask for when asking that question. These cloth masks are similar to medical masks. They do not replace N95 masks. They probably provide some protection to the wearer. Primarily, they function as a spray shield that protects the person in front of the wearer from droplets that are released with breathing, talking, coughing and sneezing. We know that many people infected by COVID-19 do not have symptoms, but may still be contagious. These masks help lower the risk that the wearer is unknowingly a threat to their patient or customer.
At the meeting Kristin Reed suggested that members might wish to listen to Bill Gates 2015 Ted Talk about pandemics.
Mike Day will be sending the link to the next Zoom meeting. The meeting ID is necessary to join the meeting. To join by video, a webcam is needed. If you have no webcam, you can still join the meeting with audio only.
