Scholarships and Interact...
June 1, 2018Its hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the end of the school year, and my son's first year at Union has gone by in a blur. I was delighted to hear that he intends to take part in the college's "study abroad" program, and he'll be spending a semester in France. Naturally, his parents are concerned that he'll be home sick while in Europe, so a visit from his mom and dad is already in the planning stages!
The high school year is also winding down, and the underclassmen and senior awards nights will take place shortly after the publication of this edition of the Windmill. Our scholarship awards will be presented at Senior Awards Night on 6/13. As the chairperson of our scholarship committee, I can assure you that it is most gratifying to read the applications from our many gifted students, who give so much back to our community. The most difficult part is deciding which 4 get the award, as they all deserve it.
Our Interact Club had a VERY active year under the guidance of our new moderator at the school Kristen Kimball,who had HUGE shoes to fill when long-time moderator Dan Lucy retired. She did a fantastic job, and was ever-present at Interact's volunteer opportunities. It started with our tag sale, a museum members event, and a Halloween Celebration at Hawkins House in October. The students then helped with bell ringing in Nov/Dec, and at museum functions as the holidays approached. In the winter months (very loosely defined this year), they helped with the Winter Carnival in N Bennington, raised money at a couple of Booster Club events, and participated in Stuff the Bus, and the Spirit of Sharing. In March, the Cats and our club had major fundraisers. Interact helped at both the pancake breakfast, and our Italian night.
Historically, volunteer opportunities are less frequent for them at the end of the year, but this year, we have things planned right through June! With so many great things happening this year, it is with great regret that I report that Kristin has accepted a position in the guidance department at Burr and Burton and will leave MAUHS at the end of the school year. The search is on for a new moderator at the school, and we hope to continue the tremendous momentum built this year under her stewardship.
