Meet Bhima Nitta - The Power Guru

April 2, 2018

Bhima Nitta
Bhima was born in southeast India in the state of Andhra in Kakinada, a small town of two hundred thousand people which is considered a relatively small town in India. This town is on the Bay of Bengal. He is the oldest of four children, three boys and a girl. His mother is a retired school teacher. His father died in 2010, he had been a professor of psychology. None of the children went into medicine, although their father was a doctor because his father would come home and talk about the autopsies he had performed.

Bhima went to college in Vizag, majoring in chemical engineering because his uncles, who were successful, said that field was a good one. He had many options when he graduated in 1987. He took the GRE and English tests and applied to a United States university and got a scholarship to RPI. He had wanted to come to the United States since hew seventeen or eighteen. He was ready to make the change.

At first he only wanted to get a Master's but he enjoyed learning and had a great deal of academic freedom. He could take classes in any area he wanted so he studied mathematics, computer science and biology.

After graduation from RPI, Bhima joined GE. for a number of years. Then he joined BOC Gases. He was not very environmentally conscious at that time. Growing up in India there was a great deal of social awareness, but Bhima had not put that together with environmental issues until the 90s. He worked for United Technologies and latef for Efficiency Vermont for seven years.

He moved to Vermont in 2007. He is the founder and President of Power Guru. He noted that you can't live a split of how you live and what you know. He cited Ghandi's, "You have to be the change you want to see in the world." as influencing his life and work. Many Rotarians would agree with him.
