Service is a Noun

July 1, 2011

Service [sur-vis] - noun-an act of helpful activity; help; aid:

Who knew a simple seven letter word could mean so much? When I joined the Relay for Life in the summer of 2002 I did not know what I was doing. I was eight years old and the decision to start a team was one of the most important decisions I have ever made. Almost a decade later I am still involved with the Relay for Life of Bennington County, however, I am now the captain of a different team - The MAUHS Interact Club. To me service is something that is done naturally. There is nothing that I would rather be doing than helping others. Through the years I have joined many people in the fight against cancer, but I have also joined my friends and other interact club members at Mount Anthony. Before joining the Interact Club in 2009 the Relay for Life was the only big event that I participated in, however, now I am involved in numerous local events put on by the Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs, the Bennington Museum, the Bennington Free Library, as well as the Relay for Life and many more. It is rewarding to be a part of these events and meet people that I wouldn't normally get the chance to meet.

This past February I was provided an opportunity to travel to Bennington's sister city-Somotillo, Nicaragua - with the Mount Anthony Interact Club. The people that we met, the service that we did, and everything we saw made me want to stay there longer. If I am ever given the opportunity to return to Nicaragua I will.

My dream is to be a neonatologist and work in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where I will always be trying to help others. This career path is something that I chose at a young age, and, with the help of MedQuest and Advanced MedQuest through Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center, I was able to shadow different departments in both Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont and Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont over the last two summers.

Aside from the Interact club I was a member of the beekeeping club, the writers club, the recycling club, and the Junior Class Vice President this past year. I'm also a tri-honor athlete competing on the varsity soccer, swim, and softball teams while maintaining a spot on the high school's honor roll each quarter. I am honored with everything I have received and I only hope that I can repay the favor by helping others with whatever I can.
