Bell Ringing

January 1, 2019

Bell Ringing
The Bennington Rotary Club has been bell ringing during the holiday season, beginning the day after Thanksgiving to the last weekend day before Christmas for twenty-five years. They do this to raise money for fuel for families in Bennington to get assistance with heating their homes. Originally, it was called the Fuel Fund but more recently it has been named Share The Heat.

This project was started by Carl Pascal, a member of Rotary and the manager of J.C. Penney at the time. Organizing the bell ringers and collecting the money was Dave Newell's job. This year he has turned the chair over to Dana Rozycki, who is carrying on Dave's fine work. As time went on, Interact students joined in and this year members of the Catamount Rotary are also ringing bells with their fellow Rotarians. The funds are matched by Green Mountain Power as they had been by CVPS.

The two hour shifts may be chilly at times, but there is the pleasure of talking with your fellow bell ringers and getting to know them better. Ted Bird tells the story of a woman who dropped a twenty dollar bill into the kettle. He thanked her profusely. However, she said that she thanked Rotary because when her family had needed assistance with her fuel bills, this program had been there to assist her.

When students at the Village School in North Bennington heard that the money contributed to the bell ringing was matched, they donated half of their proceeds from their tag sale to this project. Pictured below is the fourth grade president presenting Dana Rozycki with a check for $374.52. The total raised this year was $4280.
