Get To Know Rotary Night
March 1, 2017
On Thursday, February 9th, the Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs joined together to host a Get to Know Rotary Night mixer held at the Vermont Mill. In spite of inclement weather, attendance exceeded our expectations and as our invitations promised, it was a lively gathering!
Our intention when planning this event was to generate awareness of what Rotary is and what we as Rotarians contribute back to the community locally, nationally and internationally as well as to promote new membership. The two clubs working collaboratively began planning the event in October creating the proposed guest list, designing the invitations and planning the evening's events and refreshments.
The gathering ran from 5:30 until 7:00 with a brief presentation by presidents of both clubs, Jon Goodrich and Mike Nigro. Mike discussed our club's involvement locally as well as why someone would want to be a member of Rotary and Jon discussed what Rotary has accomplished on an international scale and how we locally play a part in that. There was a slide show that ran continuously throughout the evening that included the photos we took of Rotarians holding up signs saying "I am in Rotary Because..." interspersed with photos of various activities from both clubs. We hung up banners from both clubs and one wall was covered with signs that the Interact members had completed with "I am in Interact Because...".
So far, our club has received applications for two new members and we have had at least three other folks indicate their interest in joining. If you invited anyone to the mixer, please follow up with them by inviting them to a meeting. We provided coupons for a free breakfast or lunch meeting to all of the guests that attended, but to really be effective, a Rotarian should reach out and actually invite a guest to a specific meeting.
I think this was a successful means of generating awareness and new membership; perhaps we should consider making this an annual event!
