July 4th Bell Ringing Ceremony
June 9, 2015
Bennington, Vermont - June 5, 2015
In 1963, Congress passed Concurrent Resolution #25, authorizing what is known as the Let Freedom Ring National Bell Ringing Ceremony. In part, this resolution stated that it is "fitting" and "appropriate" to ring bells in honor of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Nationwide, there will be ceremonies ringing thirteen bells (one for each of our original states) at 2:00 pm EST. Every year, the number of participants has grown and we hope that it continue to grow to the point that folks all throughout our nation will be able to hear the ringing of the bells in much the same way as our Founding Fathers did when the Liberty Bell rang out the news in Philadelphia in 1776.
Believe it or not, the 4th of July is right around the corner and the Bennington Rotary Club is busily preparing for our part of the National Bell Ringing Ceremony which will be held at 1:45 in front of the Bennington Town Offices on South Street. This is the second year that we have participated in this event. Thirteen Rotary members will each ring the bell from the USS Bennington, one for each of the original States. This will be coordinated with several local congregations who will also be ringing their church bells. Once the 13th bell has finished tolling, actor Willy Jones, in colonial period attire, will ring the bell for the 14th time to honor Vermont, before reading the Declaration of Independence.
Please join us for this truly American celebration!
